Shetland Islands

Why do they say that the Shetland Islands are closer to Norway then they are
to the mainland UK? I've just looked on Google Earth and using the ruler
function, from the centre point of the Shetland Islands, I've calculated its
around 130 miles from there to John O'Grouts, but going from the same point
on the Shetlands to Norway, it is 230 miles. Even if I go from the top tip
of the Shetlands to Norway and then top tip of Shetland to John O'Grouts,
its still 20 miles more to Norway, then it is to mainland UK.

Why is everyone talking rubbish? Who made up this myth?

And I've just discovered an interesting fact - Shetland Islands were Danish
until the King of Denmark gave them up in the 15th Centuty when he used
mortgaged them off (along with the Orkneys) to provide as a dowry for his
two daughters.

It's a subconscious wish on behalf of the English to move Scotland as
far away from us as possible.

I would have thought it the other way around. The English need the Scots,
so they can squander all the North Sea oil and gas, whereas the Scotish have
never needed the English.

I thought the factoid was that Lerwick was closer to Oslo than to
London. Does that work?
