Travel to Switz

I am tacking on 5 days onto a business trip to Germany that ends in Stuttgart. My wife and I plan to travel by train from Stuttgart to Interlachen(?) on Sat May 26 - and from Murren/Interlachen(?) to Zurich on Wed May 31 to catch my Thursday morning flight home. My plans are to visit Lucerne, Interlachen and spend a couple of nights in the Berner Oberland. One thought is to HQ in Interlachen and take a day trip to Lucerne, via train and then day trips to the BO. Another option is to stay in Muerren for a couple of nights. So I am looking for advice on basing in Interlachen, or trying to find a place in Murren. Also trying to find out travel times from Stuttgart to Interlachen by train. Any help, advice, websites, hotel advice would be appreciated

Don't stay in Interlaken. It's a commercial center but not really that
scenic (comparatively speaking.) I would go just up the road to
Lauterbrunnen...there's a train station there, and also nearby
connections to the Murren/Gimmelwald/Schilthorn gondola. We stayed at
the Hotel Oberland, and I can recommend it.

Well, our room was large, airy and clean, with three big windows looking out at the valley and a waterfall. The folks we were traveling with
had the same experience. Guess they stuck you in the basement.

Or maybe you've never actually been there.

I was shocked as hell to see a Hooters there! Didn't go in to try the
wings either. We stayed at the Palace Hotel in Lucerne and bussed there for
the day. You'll enjoy the area no matter where you stay. We had friends
stay in Murren a few years back and they loved it. They had cars though, so
trains/busses weren't needed.

You go to Hooters for the wings? The one and only time I went to Hooters most seemed more interested in the breasts.

Good advice, but even better--stay in the mountains you have come to see.
Murren, Gimmelwald, or (on the other side of the valley) Wengen.

Well, I did stay in Interlaken and the mountains would have been scenic
if they hadn't been hiding in clouds the whole time I was there 8-) I
agree that Lauterbrunnen would be a lot more scenic. I like lakes,
though, and for those and other reasons Interlaken was a handy base camp
for someone traveling via public transport as I do.

Luzern would have been a better and cheaper base camp. I also do travel
only via public transport, and once spent a week with a rail pass in
Switzerland with base in Luzern.

We did day trips as far as e.g. the Jungfrau (Luzern-Interlaken-Jungfrau
by train, return with a stretch by ship on Brinz lake), Brig (via Furka,
return via Lotschberg), Bern and Fribourg, Schaffhausen and Konstanz,
Disentis and Chur, Geneva and Lausanne (return by ship ... which was
blocked by sand ... that time we were very late and found the hotel

Well, I liked Interlaken (said she defensively). But we wanted to spend time
on the lakes as well as in the mountains. We stayed at Hotel du Lac, across
the the Interlaken Ost station, which is the starting point for trains up
into the BO a Lucerne as well as for the boat on Lake Brienz. It's also
occurred to me that, living near mountains as we do, they're not quite as
special as for flatlanders. But I would have thought that also true for
anybody @olypen.

You're right, of course, I can see the Olympics out my living room
window. I've always loved mountains and have traveled extensively
through the Western ranges, including the Sierras, Cascades and the
Canadian Rockies. But I've really never seen anything like the view
from the Schilthorn, and the Lauterbrunnen area reminded me of Yosemite
Valley (but with cows).

Take the Golden Pass scenic train (Geneva to Lucerne), stopping in Interlaken and Montreux. Panoramic windows, the alps, can't go wrong!
