red woods , dry red woods, bobby

Fort Bragg, United States

Today I was able to catch a free breakfast at a hotel. After that it was back into the redwoods. I drove down to the visitor center on the south side of the park. Then I decided on a hike a little over 3 Miles. Right away on the hike I came upon a hawk eating on the path. It flew when I came around a corner, but I could see where it went and followed. I came within 15 of the bird and took a few pictures before it flew again. The hike was cool too, but seemed about the same as the upper area.
There are a few places to see red woods. The places I have seen so far have all been right by the coast and are considered rain forests. So I drove about 2 hours away, to a different park. This one is considered a dry forest. The trees grow taller and don’t fall from rot. The visitor center showed me a small loop nearby, but it only took about 20 min. a guy in the parking lot told me about an area of old growth a ways away. I drove over there, but the park removes all the bridges in winter. I really don’t know why they even have bridges; you could drive a car on some of the trees that fall over the river. After walking across the river, I came into an amazing place. The trees were huge even considering what I have already seen. Not only that, there were fallen trees that didn’t just rot right away. So you would get highways through the woods. I was able to measure the slight taper of the trees. At one end of a log it was a 14 inch diameter. 23 steps later it was 10 inches. This area has been my favorite so far, it seems very untouched. I also visiting Giant Tree, at one time I think they thought this was the largest tree.
After that I headed out, it was about a 2 hour drive to meet up with bobby yanasak. He lives right on hwy 1. He seems really nice and I know tomorrow will be a fun day with him.
