Peru (1989)

This is a bare-bones outline of my trip as I didn't keep a detailed journal (for reasons that even I don't understand). I'll fill in details at some later date.

Arrived in Lima. Not a favorite city. Stayed at the Hostal Beech.

Still in Lima. Still not loving it. Still at the Hostal Beech.

Day 3

Cusco, Peru

Finally, a change of scenery. Arrive in Cusco, become friendly with a woman from Vancouver and we agree to hire a guide to take us on the Inca Trail beginning tomorrow. Overnight at the Hotel Suica II.

Day 4

Machupicchu, Peru

First we take the train, passing through Ollantaitambo to Kilometer 88 near the Llactapata ruins, and hike to the Three White Stones campsite, which may or may not be near Wayllabamba. My companion gets altitude sickness but fortunately at the campsite is a fancy-shmancy tour group and they have oxygen.

Day 5

Machupicchu, Peru

Today we made it over Dead Woman's Pass, the highest we'll climb, and spent the night camping near the Runturacay ruins

Day 6

Machupicchu, Peru

Another day of trekking ... and one on which I thought I'd never get through. It wasn't the uphill portions that did me in, but rather the 1,000 Inca steps down from the last pass to the hostel near the ruins of Winay Wayna. Really, I've never felt my legs shake like that before.

Day 7

Cusco, Peru

Ah, finally, Machu Picchu. Woke up early and had the place pretty much to ourselves until the first train arrived. Well worth the effort. Took the train back to Cusco and checked into the Hotel Tambo.

Day 8

Pisac, Peru

OK, while I did spend the night in Cusco, I spent much of the day at the market in Pisac, which was fascinating. Also visited the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

Welcome to my travels. On this site you'll find recent trips and some very old trips. You'll note that for some trips I wrote very detailed reports (at least in the beginning), for others, I didn't even take notes of where I was on what dates. Nevertheless, I've done my best to document, to...
