Walking Like There's No Tomorrow

The internet has been funky, to say the least, over here the past few days. Now that it's working again, I can fill you in on the weekend. Today (Friday), we went back to Tian'amen Square. So, we left the hostel and started walking thinking that making two lefts would be easy and therefor,...

Hard-Sleepers vs Soft Sleepers

Took the overnight train from Xi'an to Beijing last night. It wasn't a bad ride. However, we were in the carriage that is the last sleeper with the 'sitters' (they only have small chairs and tables to sit at) right next to us. The smoke in that car is incredible and of course drifted into our...

Saying 'Zaijian' To Beijing (for now)

Well, it's travel day today. I don't leave until later tonight but I am getting ready now. As I was packing, it was time to say good-bye to Ben and Gaya. They are a great couple from Israel. They are both very nice, patient, and tolerant. They have a few months of traveling left. This morning,...

Whare Am I?

I am lost! I am hot. I am sunburn. I am thirsty. I am sweating like a water fountain. No one speaks my language! As a man, I refused for a time to ask for directions. It didn't matter. NO ONE SPEAKS English! Frustrating but a good learning moment. I'm having some tea and am cooling down and then...

Tian'amen Square

Went to Tian'amen Square yesterday. Took the metro train which was very covenient. One ticket is 1 Yuan or about 15 cents. I had to take Train #5 to Wondong and then transfer to Train #1. No transfers needed if you stay within the metro stations. Anyway, it was hot as hell yesterday. About 92 if...

The Great Staircase

I am having troubles uploading photos. My computer is very slow. Consequently, my post will be a day after the actual blog. Yesterday, a group of 9 of us went to see the Great Wall and The Ming Tombs. It should really be called the Great Staircase. Almost 2000 steps up and then you have to...

Arriving and The Lhama Temple

Today is Saturday. We lost a day coming over since we crossed the International Dateline. When we arrived yesterday, it was about 5:30 PM when we finally arrived at the hostel. It's called Candy's Place or, more officially, 1 Hai Inn. It's located down what we would call an alley but where there...

We built a wall!

Climbed the Great Wall today! And it really was a climb - some sections were nicely paved with even slabs and level steps - other parts were literally like climbing a ladder. It was so hard going, I walked about a 12km section and took just under three hours. Bits of the wall were away beneath...

Hello City!

Phase two of my big adventure - Beijing. I'm here for a week, and it's pretty starnge suddenly being in a city and not being surrounded by either pomello tree plantations, rice paddies or chickens! So many buildings! And it's so vast! The guide book suggests getting taxis everywhere! It's odd to...
