First Day!

Cuernavaca, Mexico

I still don't think it's set it that I'm going to be living in Mexico for the next few months, but I'm just taking my time getting settled, and it's been awesome so far! We left the (Rockwall) house yesterday at 6:20 AM, and we hadn't gotten out of our neighborhood before I realized I didn't have my plane ticket...oops. But maybe since I forgot that, I won't forget anything else...

So the plane ride was awesome. I was really tired, so I tried to make myself get some rest, but once we were flying over Mexico, I couldn't stop looking out the window. We flew along the coastline for a long time, and it was beautiful! Unlike the Texas coast, it was undeveloped, so you could see all the sand formations and stuff, which was pretty sweet. When we got farther inland and starting flying over mountains, I knew we were close, so I started looking for Mexico City. And damn, they weren't kidding about the visible smog around the city. it looked like a really dark cloud that we flew into...

When I got off the plane I realized that I was very much alone in a foreign country...which was really exhilarating, until I realized I didn't know where to go. But I figured it out quickly, and stood in line forever for immigration and customs.

The bus ride to Cuernavaca was cool because the city is so colorful. You can even tell when you're flying over it, and it made Dallas and even Austin seem really dull and grey. When we got here Julie (the intern who picked me up at the airport) showed me my house (Casa Verde - it's literally green) and my room.

The house is awesome. There are 2 courtyards, and they keep the windows and doors to the courtyards open a lot so the line is really blurred between inside and outside. The house is kind of a maze though, and it's not terribly big, but it has three staircases. For the first few weeks I'll be living in Casa Verde with the rest of the students in the program, and then at some point we move in with our host families.

After I got settled in my room and took a much-needed nap, I went to dinner with the 3 interns and one of the staff people at a traditional Mexican restaurant, where I ordered my first legal beer! It was called a "Cubana," which is just Corona and lime juice with salt on the rim - delicious! I also ordered un tamal de nopales, but it had ham in it :( Walking back from the restaurant, Laura (another intern) pointed out a yoga place that is also a vegan restaurant! And it is just down the street from my house, so I will have to try it...
