Happy Birthday Emilyy!!!

Knysna, South Africa

Happy Birthday Emilyy!!!
I wish it had been my birthday yesterday - it was such a good day! Spent the morning at Knysna Hospital and talked my way into observing in theatre =D I got there at 8am and by 8.30 I was all scrubbed in ready to see a caesarean! It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen hospital and medicine wise - and maybe so far overall. I was one of the first people the baby saw! And she was such a beautiful little baby girl. The mum had a few minutes to see her and kiss her but then she got taken up to the maternity ward for all her measurements whilst the mum had to finish up in theatre.
That morning I also got to see a Tonsillectomy and a Bi-Lateral Tubal Ligation which is the female sterilization :) I love theatre! I don't think I have a steady enough hand for surgery though... The anaesthetist suggested taking up knitting and sewing.

Anyway after the excitement of open surgery I went to the excitement of the first day of the health check ups at the swap shop :) It wasn't exactly a busy first day as only about 6 people turned up to the swap shop not the usual 100, but it meant we had an easy trial run. The swap shop is a really good project that EoA run where children from the township bring bags of recycling to be weighed and collected and in return they receive tokens to spend it the shop, they can buy anything from toys and books to clothes and toiletries and footballs and stationary. We decided we need to get some sort of lollipop incentive to give the kids after they have been checked as all they really wanted to do was to get to the shop and spend their tokens.

The rest of the night was equally as we went to see the largest Rasta community in SA and they cooked for us and played their reggae band. The leader is a guy called Maxi and he made me want to be a Rasta. Of all religions it very nearly actually made sense.... nearly. We danced for a good few hours to the reggae, which was weird at first because we were all totally sober but after we got into it it was good fun. And I met a cool little kid called Michael, he was 7, soo intelligent and could dance like nothing I've seen before! I'd quite like to keep him :)

Me Emily and Emilie stayed out drinking with Dayne and Roger til 2.30am and for god knows what reason ended up in a gay bar all night (that had no gay people in it) and we mihgt have maybe just a little bit been making fools of ourselves on the pole..... I blame Dayne. (Who is the project co-ordinator, manager and owner of EoA. She was also on the pole at one point...)

All in all it was a really good night, ending with us lying on the eating the rest of Emily's 3 layered chocolate fudge brownie cake that I made.
