Creating Maps
Hello,
I'm new on this site, checking it out along with a few other options for travel blogs. I like the "look and feel" of this site, particularly the maps look nice.
However I'm a bit confused how to creat them. I have seen several maps (Jason, screenshots, other users?) that have different markers on it - blog entries, photo locations, and just "connection" dots without blog entry. I haven't figured how to create these though. I only seem to be able to create blog entry markers, some of which turn into photo markers.. how do I manage this?
Also I'm confused about the map navigation.. a single click on the map zooms me in but not exactly to the location I clicked. From Google maps I'm used to zooming with double click or mouse scrolling. Also when I put the cursor on a map icon (blog/photo entry), the cursor changes so it looks like I can click the icon, but clicking on it doesn't select the entry but only zooms in in a weird way again. Is this the way it works, or maybe a browser problem? I'm using Firefox 3 though, that should be pretty standard, also tried IE (don't have the newest version though).
Cheers

Well the first question has kind of solved itself, I see that the different symbols (blog point, picture point, waypoint without data) are automatically slected.
Still confused about the other one though - shouldn't the symbols in the map (blog, pictures) be clickable and direct to the relevant entries? And what's the deal with the modified zooming.. why not do it in the normal google maps way (double click to zoom)?

First off, you're exactly right on Point Two. Clicking a speech bubble or photo on the map should show it to you, but instead it zooms in. It's just not intuitive. People have been asking for that for a long time, and it somehow keeps getting pushed down the priority list. Next time I have a free afternoon, I'll try to get it in!
Good to hear you're starting to get your head around the maps in general. Yeah, they're sort of intended to build themselves automatically as you go. You can actually, if you want, add waypoints to your map directly. From the Trip page, when you're logged in, you should see a link to "Add and rearrange stops with the MapBuilder." Try clicking that and playing around with it!
Glad to have you aboard.

Ok, I got bored today, so I blew off some paying work to fix the maps. Now when you click a speech bubble or camera icon, it will load up some relevant stuff for the location in question. Try it out when you get a chance.
Thanks for convincing me to do this. It's been a long time coming!

Excellent, Excellent upgrade Jason. It might convince me to actually upload my photos here (which I've resisted b/c the process of putting them into posts seemed more cumbersome than it was worth).

Just one thing ... now that photos are "assigned" to a location and blog post (even if not embedded in the post), when you have a post up that has a photo in the left hand column -- which is really, really great, btw -- the post overlaps with the left hand column, which has your profile/info.
I'd like to suggest that you just get rid of the profile/into on the style sheet for individual posts because it seems that, once someone has gotten there, they know who you are.
But again, one of the best upgrades you've done in a long, long time. Thanks much.
