I just tried making a new account for myself by clicking the "Start a Travel Blog", and then filling out the little form that pops up on the right side of the screen saying "Create a new account".

It is possible that the username you want is already taken, or that it has wierd looking characters in it, but it should be telling you that on the screen. Same thing if you gave it a strange looking email address.
