Trip Builder

Jason:
The site is working better and better, with photo loading now working seamlessly and the map header showing both the trip completed and planned: nice!
Family and friends remain delighted with the site, as do I.

Unfortunately, trip builder remains a disaster. Yesterday I tried to delete a lot of the villages I have passed but from which I am not posting an entry. I deleted 10 or 12 of them by hitting the x in trip builder next to their name, and then hit quick save. The save was very slow, and afterwards I discovered that the deletions had not occurred. I tried redeleting and then hitting save and exit. After 25 minutes the save was still busy and I bailed out.

It seems like saving in trip builder re-saves the entire blog...I cannot otherwise account for the extremely long save time. Far better would be to have trip builder remember only the locations and the order, with a reference to each actual enry so that each actual entry doesn't have to be resaved (if that is what's happening).

Especially with the slow dial-up connections I often run into, quick functionality is realy important. It would be great if you could give this some attention.

That sounds pretty painful. Dealing with slow dialup connections is bad enough. Having the site fail to work as expected is just not cool.

I think I know what's stopping you from being able to delete waypoints from the map. Hopefully I can get a new version up soon that will work as advertised.

I'm afraid that the slow load times may be around for a while though. The way the Trip Builder works today, it bundles up the whole list of places and dates on the web browser, and sends it off to the server for processing. Since the only thing slower than a Nigerian dialup connection is UPLOADING stuff through a Nigerian dialup connection, you may be in for a rough ride. Again, I'll look into options here, but I'm a little less hopeful with this one.

Anyway, keep up the amazing blog entries! I almost hate to see that line of entries getting closer to the water. We'll have to find a way to convince you to keep going!

Hey Roel, I just pushed a new build that fixes the bug you described. You should now be able to delete those extra waypoints from your map, and they should actually stay deleted when you hit Save!

I built in a quick safety measure that prevents you from deleting full-fledged blog entries using that tool, so you won't have to worry about accidentally lopping off one of your posts. If you actually do want to delete a blog entry, there is a button for that on the Edit screen for the entry.

Anyway, hope this helps a bit. Keep up the good work!

Hi Jason,
No success yet with Trip Builder, but I wonder if something else is going on. Blogabong works differently depending on whether there is a proxy server involved in using Internet Explorer. When there is a proxy server, photos only enter one at a time for example. Today, with a proxy server in the setup, I get no list of destinations with trip builder: I get the page format without any destinations and a small note at the bottom of the page saying "error on page" where it should say "done"...Anyway, food for thought. I appreciate your continued effort to solve these little bugs.
Regards.
Roel
