First make sure you get to a safe place. Staying with your home is not going to save it and you may be putting you and your loved ones lives at stake. Make sure you gather your important papers, pack a bag and get out! Do not wait until you see water come into your home. Denial is what is putting most people in a deadly situation.
Do not drive in standing water, you don't know what is underneath or how deep the water is. Turn around and find another way or call DOT 511 to assist you. Again do not take the chance of trying to cross the water it could be fatal.
Contact your insurance agent and find out what kind of coverage you have. Many did not have flood insurance because they were not technically in a flood plain. If you find you do not have flood insurance call FEMA ((800) 621-3362) to find out the process to get apart of the emergency funds requested by the State.
Help your neighbors! Most times you are your neighbors keeper because it might take hours before you get help. Check for the elderly and small children in your neighborhood and make sure they are in a safe place. People are losing their lives because they are paralyzed with fear. If you find yourself in trouble do not panic. Call 911 and do exactly what they say. They are trained professionals.
Boil your water even if you home has not been damaged. Flooding causes contamination which leads to disease and illness.
