¡Viva Guápulo!

What an adventure! Last night I went with my classmates and other friends to the neighborhood of Guápulo in Quito for the celebration of the virgin of Guápulo held in the church plaza. The taxi took us through a winding maze of narrow, steep cobblestoned streets as far as he could and then we...

another one bites the dust

This week was jam packed, but went by so quickly. Each day I was out of the house from about 715 in the morning, until 715ish at night. Long days for sure. Class is going well but it is hard for me to be in the same place for such a long period of time. Luckily, we do have a few breaks where we...

solo sé que nada sé

I've been in Quito now for almost a week. The trip down was wicked easy and I only had a 1 day delay for my baggage...not too bad. From my flight, the baggage of about 30 people didn't make it to Quito with us. But all is well now. I'm living with a warm, welcoming Ecuadorian family which...

Quito

Now in the capital city of Ecuador. Staying in the new town with numerous bars and clubs none of which we can visit as we are on medication for more parasites and food poisoning. In the new town we have visited contemporary art museums, Ecuador's national museum, the second highest football...

Last trip to Búa

Returned from Búa yesterday afternoon. Worked with Pascal on the mapping project and discussed the continuation of the work after we both leave Ecuador this month (in my case at the end of next week). Also discussed my visit to Finca Sarita with Alfonso, a Tsa'chila collaborator with Yanapuma....

Mi hija

Had a great time with Alyssa last week, traveling around the northern part of the country - the cloud forest around Mindo, the coast at Canoa, the traditional market at Otavalo in the _highlands_ and the historic center of Quito.

Anticipation

Waiting with much excitement for Alyssa to arrive tonight and then to travel with her around the country next week. :) Making good progress with the mapping of the Búa territory. Visited Búa again Tuesday and Wednesday to coordinate with Pascal, who's been living there, taking GPS...

Robbed!

The night before last, a place where I and many other interns and volunteers had stashed our belongings, was broken into, ransacked and robbed. I was away in the Búa community only one day when I heard the news, and returned yesterday to assess the damage. Lost my travel guitar, but other...

Local thinking

Spent a couple of days at a farm on the coast, on a nature reserve owned by George and Christine, a couple from Peru who moved from the city to live close to the land, to help organize associations for conservation and organic production, and to set an example for others in how to manage the...
