Day 2 in NY - Still no bags
New York
,
United States
Donuts for breakfast, now sitting in the sun outside the airport hoping that these bloody bags will turn up. Put a call through to the parents, mum was out so broke the news about the bags to dad which was much easier!
We are already starting to get into the baseball which always seems to be on TV. A good turnaround by the Mets vs. the Braves. (From Wikipedia - The 2000 season began well for the Mets as Derek Bell became the best hitter on the team for the first month. The highlight of the season came on June 30 when the Mets beat the rival Atlanta Braves in a memorable game at Shea Stadium on Fireworks Night. With the Mets losing 8–1 to begin the bottom of the eighth, they rallied back with two outs to tie the game, capping the 10-run inning with Mike Piazza's three run home run to put the Mets up 11-8, giving them the lead and eventually the win.)

We might go and watch today's game in the airport bar over a couple of Buds - More later
We have entered Manhattan, it feels a bit like entering the Lion's den after our comfortable chain hotel, going on the subway felt exact like being in the movies. We reached the hostel - it is huge.

HI Hostel New York
After buying and spraying some deodourant we felt ok to head out for a beer after tucking into the BBQ in the hostel courtyard. We went to the Dublin House Bar
It was a good find, cheap beer with a Simpsons/Cheers style. We propped up the bar talking sports with the local Yankees. To get down there we had to walk from 103rd street to 79th down Amsterdam Avenue (at least our luggage will feel at home). It is amazing as you walk how the districts change dramatically even in the space of a few blocks - one minute you are scared for your life, the next it's all posh bars and restuarants.
Got back to the hostel at about 11.30 after getting the subway which strangely felt safer at night (or maybe that was the beers). I took top bunk in our hostel room that is as hot as hell despite having an air-conditioning unit that sounds like an 18 wheeler truck.

We're here!

Well we're here in New York, unfortunately our bags aren't! Oh dear, some sort of mix up means they have gone astray in Amsterdam (remind me to fly direct next time). Anyway hopefully this won't be a very short journal and the bags will arrive under their own steam. After being understandably pissed off we have cooled down now we are in the comfort of the Hampton Inn Newark, luckily really as we have no towels etc. Other than the bags issue the flight was ok, I couldn't sit next to Ben on the flight but the amusing moment of the day had to be the Amish fellow who got onto the flight in full gear, long sideburns etc. He sat in front of the women next to me with his bowler hat on the whole flight so she couldn't see the movie - didn't miss much though!
Just watching the US version of family fortunes before going back to the airport to kick some NorthWest Airlines Butt. We need some more news on whether we are going three months with one set of clothes and no toothbrush.
