Welcome to my travels. On this site you'll find recent trips and some very old trips. You'll note that for some trips I wrote very detailed reports (at least in the beginning), for others, I didn't even take notes of where I was on what dates. Nevertheless, I've done my best to document, to the extent I can, all of my major trips.

Day 6

Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia

After buying some opals in the morning, today was a rather boring one, driving the Stuart Highway and Lassiter Highway as far as Curtain Springs Station. Nothing to see, really, except lots of red sand and dirt and basic, unquaint truck stops. Nothing like the real outback feel of the last three days.

Tonight is spent on the Station, watching the sun set over Mt. Conner.

Day 5

Coober Pedy, Australia

Woke up and went to call Tom, who wouldn't take my call! Other, more pressing, phone call I guess (a bigger name on the other line).

A quick breakfast and then up the trail, but not before seeing our first camels of the trip, in a pen in Marree. Along the way we stopped at South Lake Eyre, where I sank into the mud up to my calves (which is a long way). We drove by a few springs which produced oases and followed the track that parallels the old, abandoned Ghan railway. The dirt track road was long and dusty, with nothing in sight from horizon to horizon, except the occasional ruin of an old homestead, some still with cars rotting away.

We stopped for lunch at William Creek, a one-pub town, and the smallest in all of Australia (or so they say), set in the middle of the largest cattle ranch in the world, Anna Creek Station. At the pub there was a real outback crowd -- an aboriginal, who kept insisting that he was "Pete's head stockman" and had two horses, a race horse and an apaloosa. There were also several government workers and real tourists, in white slacks and all!

We then drove to Coober Pedy, opal mining capital of the world. Apparently, we also saw and crossed the doge fence, but we were so tired of seeing station fences we didn't realize it.

Arriving in Coober Pedy, we walked about before having dinner at John's Pizza Parlour and turning in. We still have some stone buying to do.

Day 4

Blinman, Australia

We were up early (as alway with camping) -- birds everywhere. Crows, beautiful black and white magpies and pink galahs. We packed up our gear and went on a short hike to the old homestead (easy) and wangarra lookout (a bit steep). Along the way we saw several emus and two kangaroos, mother and joey, the advantage of early rising.

From Flinders Ranges we drove to Blinman where a great mixed grill and salad bar was available. The hotel appeared quite nice, with a swimming pool next door full of children. Along the way, we passed by the "great wall of China" -- an interesting rock formation.

Day 4 (Continued)

Lyndhurst, Australia

After lunch we drove through Parachilna Gorge where the road was criss-crossed by a creek. We saw a wallaby and passed through Angorichina to Parachilna. From there it was north to Leigh Creek and Lyndhurst, where the paved road ends and the Strzelecki Track begins.

It is also were "talc alf" lives. He's an interesting guy who philosophizes about the meaning of letters (e.g. GOD = Gives Life (O = sun) Death) and makes unique sculptures, one of which I purchased (a kangaroo).

Day 4 (Continued)

Marree, Australia

From Lyndhurst it was about 80 km to Marree, which consists of an old Victorian hotel right out of a John Wayne western, which is where we stayed for the night, and a "petrol" station.

Tomorrow we start the Oodnadatta Track to Ayers Rock and Alice Springs, and just learned that Lake Eyre (which we will pass tomorrow) has water for only the 3rd time since white settlers arrived (or so they say).

Day 3

Tarlee, Australia

We left Adeleide around 9:30 or 10:00, with our first destination being Gawler on the lower Barossa Valley, a wine growing region. Instead of going directly into the Barossa Valley, we headed up highway 32 towards Tarlee.

Day 3 (Continued)

Burra, Australia

After Tarlee, we made a wrong turn and ended up on 83 driving through Auburn on our way to Clare. This turned out to be good luck because to cut back over we went through Mintaro, a quaint, very little 19th century town. Just outside of Mintaro was Martindale Hall, the house allegedly featured in "the house at hanging rock. We then had lunch in Burra, a well-preserved little town.
