Day 1

Sydney, Australia

Arrived in Sydney around 6:00 a.m., but just barely. Apparently, there had been a fire in the airport the night before and the airport had been evacuated and closed. Of course, it was closed anyway. Seems there's a nighttime curfew and planes can't land before 5 a.m. In fact, we had to take off late from Los Angeles because the tailwinds were so strong they were afraid we might land too early. Had an hour layover in Sydney and then flew on to Melbourne.

Day 1 (Continued)

Melbourne, Australia

Upon arrival, took a cab to the city center and walked a bit. Made my Darwin tour arrangements, bought a journal, and had lunch at the Hopetown Tea Room.

Melbourne has an excellent little zoo. Extremely green and lush with narrow little footpaths winding their way through the gardens. In fact, there is nothing between you (me) and the emus and wallabies except a knee high log railing. The animals can cross the path at their leisure -- kind of a lion country safari without the car. Saw a platypus -- very small animal.

I had taken the train to the zoo, but missed the first one because my watch was half an hour slow -- I was already on Adeleide time. For lunch, I had asparagus and cheese on rye -- very tea-time, or so it seemed.

Day 1 (Continued)

Adelaide, Australia

Peter and Gretchen met me at the airport and took me to my hotel, a pub called Moore's Breaknock Hotel. Very Irish, quite clean and a fair bargain at A$30/night. After dropping my bag and giving Gretchen her things, we walked across town to a pizza parlour for dinner and talked until I nearly fell asleep, which I did as soon as I got back to my hotel.

Day 2

Adelaide, Australia

I was up and about by 8:30, although Gretchen didn't arrive until after 10. We then walked into the center of the city and did some errands -- bought a flashlight, made Island reservations, etc. We then went to Peter's mother's card shop and I was properly introduced. From there it was a trip to the bank and to the old parliament house and the university where Gretchen works. Then back to pick up my tickets and take the tram to Glenelg, the "santa monica pier of Adeliede" as Peter puts it.

The tram was quite quaint and provincial, Glenelg was not. However, on the pier I ran into a Bennington parent -- the small world theory of life -- thanks to my house chairperson t-shirt. Ate lunch at a "take-away" lamb restaurant and then back to the city by bus (due to a tram derailment).

More shopping -- post cards and a Ken Done shirt for Anne. From there we went to the Merenda home for a fine bar-b-que dinner -- Steve would have died from all the meat. After, Peter, Gretchen, Angie (Peter's sister) and her boyfriend and I went for a night time drive including a trip up the hills for a view of Adeliede not unlike that of LA from Mulholland. I think I saw Orion in the sky, but I don't know if that's possible in the south -- the stars are so clear here, I can't imagine what they'll be in the Outback.

Day 3

Tarlee, Australia

We left Adeleide around 9:30 or 10:00, with our first destination being Gawler on the lower Barossa Valley, a wine growing region. Instead of going directly into the Barossa Valley, we headed up highway 32 towards Tarlee.

Day 3 (Continued)

Burra, Australia

After Tarlee, we made a wrong turn and ended up on 83 driving through Auburn on our way to Clare. This turned out to be good luck because to cut back over we went through Mintaro, a quaint, very little 19th century town. Just outside of Mintaro was Martindale Hall, the house allegedly featured in "the house at hanging rock. We then had lunch in Burra, a well-preserved little town.

Welcome to my travels. On this site you'll find recent trips and some very old trips. You'll note that for some trips I wrote very detailed reports (at least in the beginning), for others, I didn't even take notes of where I was on what dates. Nevertheless, I've done my best to document, to...
