May 13, 2011 - Ambleside

Ambleside, United Kingdom

Walked into Ambleside today the same route that I ran the other day and took some photos. There was a beautiful rainbow over Ambleside as I was leaving town on my way back to Rydal...photos probably don't do it justice.

St. Mary's Church is one of only two churches with spires in the lake district. It was built between 1850 -1854. Apparently, The size of the spire caused much consternation at the time as it was thought to be too ostentatious. I'd have to agree! The Wordsworth Chapel at the church was built as a memorial to the poet who had recently died in 1850.

In the next couple of days I plan on going to Rydal Hall that is said to have beautiful gardens and Rydal Mount, which was Wordsworth's home from 1813 until his death in 1850 and also to Keswick to see the Castlerigg stone Circle which is 3000 years old.
