A Birthday Travel

Interlaken, Switzerland

The Alps: 11 people, 10 beds, 9 bottles of wine, 8 partridges in a pear tree, 7 times Chris fell, 6 people returning to Brig, 5 pocket coffees stolen from Jenal, 4 blacks (diamonds) on Grindelwald, 3 people left behind, 2 runs on the half pipe, 1 Birthday.

These were by far the most beautiful mountains I have ever seen. I would constantly catch myself looking up and completely forget what I was doing. The most noticeable difference was the amount of rock showing. This wasn’t like Park City, in that the sheerness of the cliffs made it impossible to completely cover an entire mountain in snow. Out of nowhere there would be huge chunks of rock. The snow was also very different.

It was much dryer, and since the runs weren’t groomed as often, some parts tended to be very icey. The last thing is that it was completely above the tree line. Approximately 7000ft. This is much lower than Utah and I didn’t really find myself ever gasping for air or having to rest my legs. There were only a few black diamonds, and these really weren’t difficult, I’d compare them to most double blues. And I was completely unable to find any moguls. That being said the experience of just skiing in the Alps was amazing.

When we got to Interlaken Chris, Dan, Colleen and I immediately went to rent our equipment. Colleen and I both rented skis and Chris and Dan rented snowboards. We went to a pretty authentic Swiss restaurant about 10 minutes away, since it was Jessica’s Birthday.

The Swiss aren’t on the euro which made things a little more difficult as only some of us had any Francs. I think 1 franc is about 80-90 American cents (not that it matters because I’ve completely converted my thinking to Euros). The four of us went back to the Hostel (Hostel Funny Farm) after dinner, maybe 2130-2200 and tried to get some sleep, while everyone else went out to what I guess was the worst club in all of Interlaken, or at least the worst attended. Our day started early at 645 and we hurried to get our gear on and catch the 730 bus that will take us to the tram that takes us the 40 minutes to the town where we need to walk 20 minutes to the lift which takes us up the mountain for 30 minutes…. We finally get to the mountain a little before 9. After a few bunny hills we move on to a bit tougher terrain. Colleen, having not skied in years caught on very quickly. We explore nearly every run, and even take one of those old fashioned T lifts, Colleen had trouble with her dismount (twice) and nearly killed Dan.
Lunch was at 1230, I'm pretty sure I ordered Italian. After, we get separated from Colleen and I try to convince Dan and Chris to try some difficult runs. They also convince me to try the half pipe. It was hard. I was way more out of breath by the bottom than I had been going down any of the runs all day. I end up trying it once more after. I wasn't able (didn't try) to catch any air, but it was definitely a start for next year. We miraculously find Colleen at the bottom of a lift and we give her the keycard so she can heads back. We go up again and I try hitting the Jump Park. My first jump was fairly successive but my second jump I landed way to hard and spiraled down the back, but didn't lose my skis. Luckily there was only one person on the chairlift to laugh at me. It was about 1530 by now and Chris, Dan and I headed to the other side of the mountain where we were going to take the longest run home. Bad idea. The first kilometer of the run was either flat or uphill. We walked. And it was getting dark. Once we made it to ski-able terrain it turned into a great intermediate run with a beautiful tour of the valley. We reach the bottom and spend the next 90 minutes taking the transport home. I return the equipment and found out that the ski pass I had could track where I went, although I haven’t yet checked.

It was Jessica’s Birthday. I don’t think I will ever forget what day she was born. The girls had bought wine, champagne and a cake for her. We sing her happy birthday and proceed to drink in the room. We were all ordered to take shots of whiskey; it was Jessica’s Birthday.

Kristina had bought the worst smelling stinky cheese and had completely destroyed the ability to breathe normally in our fairly large room. By now the shameless Jessica had finally come out, and had one of the best quotes of the trip: “You don’t need to get me drunk to take advantage of me.” Somewhere around this time Alex “smelt something really bad” and rushed out of the room… rumors abound, but we don’t think it was the cheese. After We head down to the train station and head into a Chinese restaurant at 2220, and it was clear from the start that we were not wanted. They reluctantly sit us down and we open the menu… Duck was 42 Francs, Rice was 7.50. Yes 7.5 francs. That was how much my lunch for the past 2 days had cost. Probably more. Janel very tactfully informed them that we could not finish eating by the 2300 deadline they had told us.
A few people have a fit about how rude we were. I feel we were doing them a favor; they don’t earn tip and the last thing they want to deal with in an empty restaurant is 11 drunk kids who are all trying to order the cheapest thing on the menu. Besides, after spending over 60 Euro (refer to the Brig fiasco) just to get to Interlaken, and over 115 Francs to rent skis and a lift ticket, the last thing I want is Switzerland’s most expensive rice. I am attempting to budget . So we go to the next best place, Hooters. It was Jessica’s Birthday after all. This had to be the worst Hooters in the History of Hooters.
They might as well have called it Surfboards or, Ugly European Waitresses in Skimpy Orange Spankies. Johnny put it very nicely, “usually I am too distracted to look at the menu, no, not here.”

Since everyone was finally getting along we decide to have a conversation about sex and religion at the dinner table. I wasn’t too hungry, and I decide to get my plate of invisible burger (good one Chris). I feel as poor as my really poor roommate. Also I didn’t have any Francs and didn’t want to go to a bank. After dinner we head back to the hostel, Masha fell asleep with her clothes on and the rest of us head down to the “club” (read, “basement”). The DJ was pushing 70 and the ratio of guys to girls was also about 30:1. I head up a little early from a long day and everyone else calls it a night by 3ish. We woke up at 745 to catch our 910 train. Jessica missed it. It was not her Birthday anymore. Luckily we had a layover in Brig and there was a fairytale ending.

I am on the train home now, it’s amazing to think that while I write this I have passed under the Swiss Alps back in Italia.

Reflections on the trips:
It’s amazing how quickly the people change from place to place. From Brig to Interlaken, Milano to Firenze. Even 50km away people have taken up completely different looks, attitudes, language and mannerisms. Europe is much more diverse than America culture wise.

Growing up so close to the beach I often take for granted just how beautiful it really is. Looking up at the mountains I saw a close parallel. The people here get up every morning to see one the most awesome sights in the entire world. I’m sure that they have become very desensitized to it. It is so unfortunate, but yet that is human nature, to take for granted that which has become commonplace.

I got very jealous walking through Interlaken and Brig. I longed for the simplicity of the life that many of them lead. Working just enough to have the necessities and then the rest of the time spending on something they love. Most of them never had to worry about what college to get into. But what comes with that is also the loss of things we do enjoy worrying about. Most of them are completely and utterly passionate about the mountain. I wanted that.

On the way to Interlaken

Brig, Switzerland

The Brig Fiasco

The trip started off as a Birthday celebration for Jessica. Being such, we let the girls take the reins on this one. What started off as a 15-18 euro total hostel turned into 25 which finally turned into 35. The train tickets were only roughly confirmed and not followed through on. Milano to Brig was 18, Brig to Interlaken (half the time) was 30! I realized that there was not much we could really do about this, we were already here, I was bummed because I had spent the time making sure that the Firenze trip had gone off without a hitch. Besides, if I was already going to the Alps for an insanely expensive ski trip, I would rather go to Zermatt, and ski the infamous Matterhorn.

It is what it is. I know that I slightly overreacted, but I was pissed that no one was really in charge or could give an exact estimate of how much the trip was going to cost. It is very tough to plan a trip with 11 people. Things necessarily have to work differently. Not many places are able to fit 11 people in for dinner, and if they can, tables are usually Split, and the check! That’s an adventure on its own!

Chris and I ran to the library to check how much it could be to forfeit our hostel in Interlaken and possibly go to Zermatt. Unfortunately that didn’t work out. So it goes. How many people can they say that they skied the alps?!?!

Brig was a very quaint town, Disneyland-esque, with cobblestone roads and an amazing view everywhere you looked. But I don’t see how they could possibly cater to tourists when no place takes credit and when their money is way more flamboyant and crazier than the euro.

Trip to Firenze e Pisa

Firenze, Italy

Masha arrived Thursday around 16:00 and proceeded to terrorize my room with her 300 lbs of baggage. After catching up with her and visiting Bocconi and the Duomo it was about time we went to Dinner for Alberto's last night, as he will be leaving us for some crappy town in China. And since we want to show him a good time we thought a cheap mexican place would be a good bet. So Papa's and Beer it is.

There is no such thing as cheap mexican food in Italia. You'd expect a 14 euro burrito to be decent, but from what i saw I'm glad that Masha and I went in on a 8 euro (each) Quesadilla, I could literally eat 3 of these. After our insanely expensive (and crappy (in my opinion) meal) we decided to hit The Club a little early, as going back to Arco would take to long. Johnny had brought a bunch of wine, and Masha and I had brought some beer.

We finished everything we had outside and then proceeded inside with the same deal we get for every club, 10 euro cover with 2 drinks, or free cover, drinks are usually 10 euro. Needless to say we went with the free drinks. The Club was pretty nice and since we got there around 23:00 it was really easy to get our own table, we decided not to coat check (against my better judgment). Their fragole invisible was the strongest yet and 2 of them basically knocked everyone on their feet, especially Jenal, who proceeded to take a nap at the table. To our pleasure this was a perfect photo opportunity. By 4am it was time to head out as we had to wake up at 9 to catch our 11am train to Firenze. Chris and I helped carry Jenal to the cab. We got home safe and soon everyone was up at 9. I was able to take really embarrassing photos of Masha on the train.

The train ride was fairly uneventful and took us to the station right outside of Florence. We headed in and since I've stayed at Plus Florence before showed everyone how to get there. It was a beautiful day so a few people decided to take off their jackets and go in just a shirt. It got cold fast. We went to the Duomo and got a few good shots in front of the Gates to Heaven and Hell and of course inside. Beautiful as always but I still like our Duomo more. We walked around looking for gelato. and explored the Ponte Vecchio before heading back to the Hostel and getting ready for dinner.

We find this really good place that Dan had in his guide book that offers 2 courses, a vegetable course, water, wine and service for only 12 Euro. A great deal and one of the best meals I've had in 3 weeks. I called Carolyn and we decided to meet up in a few hours and head to the bars.

Chris, Colleen, Dan and Jenal head over to meet Carolyn at the Duomo and on the way i ran into Danica Kalmbach my old neighbor.

I knew she was in Firenze, but didn't have her number at all. We drink a little at Carolyns and then head to a packed bar where i see still more Cal people! It was about 1am and we were kinda tired from the day of traveling and exploring and so we head back home. The four of us, Chris, Jenal, Colleen and I walked in the direction that I believed was home, Dan had gone to visit his friends. I have no idea where we ended up. Our goal of being home by 1:15 turned slowly into 2:30. I felt really bad for everyone else, honestly I was loving exploring at night.

We wake up at 9ish and start again to explore. We head straight to the Accademia where they have David. There was no line this time! It was still as impressive as ever and I was able to snap a picture or two. We head over to the Uffizi where we decide to split up because Kris, Jenal, Chris and I had already seen it. We then head to the top of the city to Piazza di Michelangelo (I think). I get the chance to take a few more HDR photos, which turned out ok, its tough when the picture is so busy. It was another beautiful day and we head back to meet everyone.

We walk back to the center of town the whole time I'm trying to match places to their respective scenes in Hannibal, its kinda difficult, but I was able to find a few. We grab lunch and then I head back to the Hostel to nap. I wake up just in time to shower (i used the sheets to dry off) and go to dinner. We went to a place just down the road with the same deal, but this time decide to drink even more wine (uh oh). After dinner we head back to the hostel, and meet up with Carolyn and Cami, we continue drinking before heading out to club Space. It's a pretty cool club, but I spend most of my time up top people watching and talking. The rest of the night is my dramatic escape, and capture from the club, and my first ever bribe in Italia. I think we all decided this is where the night should end.

I woke up at 730 (shaken awake), slightly hungover/drunk and we finished packing and got to the Santa Maria Novella right on time to catch our train. It was a very uncomfortable hour train ride, and the weather was starting to turn bad. We got to Pisa and it was raining slightly. We split up again and half of us decided to walk and half took the bus. Jenal Kathy and Colleen decide to get some Kabob, but Chris and I are too poor, like my roommate (hahaha), to buy breakfast.

Pisa is a normal city and literally the only thing to see is the tower, which is everything you've ever pictured. It really was cool to see. It was also 15 euro to get to the top, so we proceeded to take really cheesy tourist pictures instead. Kathy and Jessica go to Mass while the rest of us head off to get lunch. Chris and I are still too poor to eat. I stole some of Kris's french fries.

Our train home is at 17:00 and its about 11-12 when we finally get back to the train station. Everyone decides to get on the earlier train that we didn't exactly pay for... within 30 minutes the conductor comes and we have to pay for the difference. Moving to another cabin the 6 of us (Masha, Chris, Colleen, Dan, Kathy) turn the Seats into a giant love bed. the remaining 4 hours of the trip is uneventful, everyone wanted to sleep and my Ipod died. Halfway through the trip as I'm getting up to go to the bathroom a couple opens the door and as I'm standing there awkwardly, 5 bodies pressed against each other in spoon formation I say "Morto Ciao" a complete inside joke that translates roughly to "extra hey." They slowly back out of the cabin.

We get home safely, a little bit tired and a lot wiser.
