Pre-Trip: Packing the Car

Boston, United States

Last night, we packed the car. Luckily, Will and Rusty were around to help us! Everything fit, thanks to Mike's mad "tetris" skills, but the car was way too heavy so we had to take some stuff out. And we later discovered that we forgot my box of books for school, so we are going to have to have that shipped to us instead. But after all that, it went ok!

We bought a camera today since we didn't have one and wanted pictures of our trip. So expect updates with pics! It is a Nikon Coolpix. Let's hope that it works better than the one my mom has!

It has been hard saying goodbye to everyone... although it still doesn't feel real yet. We are having breakfast with my family tomorrow morning, and leaving here to be on our way by 9am (at the latest!). Since Marissa isn't going to be around, we aren't stopping in Albany anymore like we had originally planned. So we should hit Niagara Falls by 5 (it will take about 8 hours- that is, if we don't get lost or stop). We have a hotel booked in Ontario (my first time to Canada!), so there will be an update from there tomorrow night.

D-6: Pre-packing!

Jakarta, Indonesia

I woke up earlier this morning and went to Mayestik Market with my uncle, Oom Tisna. I went to buy some souvenirs for the other Changemakers, bought 100 batik keychains in the form of batik bags and batik hems. Mum bought me a suitcase and a few socks. I went to my auntie's, Tante Mawly, house too. She lent me a few wool sweater, a coat and jackets.

The night before

Philadelphia, United States

It is hectic. I tried to call Timmy and he didn't answer so I am not quite sure he will be here tomorrow. Linda's Dad called and told me he didn't think we had enought time to make the plane on the way back. Anisa was sad because we were leaving. I had to tell her that she would have a great time with her Grandad and her Uncle and that we were only a phone call away. Showed her the blog and how we would keep her updated, and that we could text. So she sent me a quick text just to be sure. Now I have to finish some work stuff and then start packing.

Getting ready for my first backpacking adventure...

Charlotte, United States

I’m feeling excited and anxious.

My upcoming trip is a first for a lot of reasons: I’ve never traveled alone, limited my luggage to just one backpack, stayed at a hostel, nor visited the West coast. This is also the first of many trips I’ll be doing for the next 12 months. A lot of due diligence is required and there are many learning opportunities coming up.

The departing flight is scheduled to leave Charlotte around 6am, stop in Ohio for an hour, and arrive in San Francisco around 11am PST. I’ll be staying in a 4-bed female dorm ensuite for about $31/night in a hostel near the heart of the city. More details during/after the trip. With the big ticket expenses taken care of, it’s time to focus on what I’m taking with me. The weather should be mostly sunny, ranging from 61 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a little chilly for my warm-natured self.

Perusing dozens of travel websites and blogs helped me prioritize what items to pack. For now the list reads as follows:

-Large off-brand backpack to fit all items and can be left at the hostel during the day.
-Small and lightweight Under Armour backpack designed for hiking and large enough to accommodate my netbook, camelback-style hydration pack, camera, scarf, and small items I might purchase along the way.
-Toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste
-Deodorant (will buy shampoo and soap in SF)
-Chapstick
-Fast-drying hand towel
-Fleece sheet with pillow
-Extra pillowcase
-4 tshirts, 2 jackets, and 1 hoodie
-2 jeans and 1 pj pant
-4 socks, 5 panties, 3 bras
-Closed sandals and versatile semi-flats
-Dell netbook and charger
-Camera, extra SD card, usb cord/charger
-iPhone and usb cord/charger
-$40 cash for emergencies
-Printout of flight schedule and reservations
-Ziploc bags and waterproof bags to fit clothes in case it rains while walking to/from the hostel

So far that’s all I’m packing, really hoping it will suffice for my short 4 day trip.

9 days

Campinas, Brazil

Hello everyone, this is just an experimental post. Mary and I are very excited about our trip. Just 9 days until we depart! Mary and I have been friends for about 5 years now. We met in Law school. But during that time, she took 1 year off to go to Japan and Canada. In the meantime, I did some travelling of my own. I visited USA a couple of times and Europe in the summer 2008. It was an amazing trip, and I couldn't wait to save money to go again. I bet this trip will be very exciting, not only because I'll get to visit some new countries I've never been too, but Mary will get to meet a whole new continent! I did some packing yesterday, I'm so afraid of forgetting something. Mary wrote me saying that she's been doing some packing as well. We're in advantage because we're the same size, so we can pack light and not have to take much stuff.
Anyway, I'm gonna go watch the Italy game now. I hate to say this (considering I am part italian), but I think they are a strong competitor for Brazil, and therefore, I'll be cheering for Paraguay. I always end up cheering for the underdog anyway haha.
Let's cheer for Brazil tomorrow guys!!!!

Beijos!

Less than a Week!

Baltimore, United States

Ahhh!!! Less than a week to go! I have started packing and getting everything organized. Some of the things necessary to bring for our trip....
Lots of Bug Spray!
Malaria Medication
Anti-Biotics (just in case)
Books Books Books! For the kids
Sunscreen
Jacket (The Mountain Gets Cold)
Good Walking Shoes
Spanish language book

That is just a few of the over 10 suitcases we are packing. All full with school supplies, books! And anything else we may need while in Guatemala.

I started my anti-malarial medication in Monday. While in the city the Mosquitos aren't so bad, but while by the water and in Costa Rica it gets a little buggier.

I am also taking a prescription of cipro. It is an antibiotic for anyone to take if we were to get sick. We cannot drink the water while on Guatemala because it is not filtered like it is in the states. Interesting fact though, the same ingredients In cipro are also in tonic water. I have a microbiologist for a dad so I get to learn this stuff.

I post more as the day gets closer and closer!
